Fractions Narrative

Learner: Stephan                     Learning Coach: Mr Hattie          Date:  6 July 2016
Learning Area: Learning Habitat 1 - Mathematics
Learning Observed
In Learning Habitat 1 we are focusing on fractions. We are working on finding a fraction of a set by equal sharing. Today in our workshop we started with the problem “Find ⅕ of 15”. Stephan was so excited that he didn’t even wait for me to say go he instantly started to solve the problem. Stephan raced ahead and was able to solve the problem. This was great that he has developed his Capabilities over the last few weeks. Stephan asked me can you give me a harder one. So I wrote on the board ¾ of 12. He started straight away again. This time he found ¼ of 12 and said 3. Which is correct, but to find ¾ of 12 he now needs to multiply the ¼ with the numerator. We spoke about this for awhile and Stephan started talking about it with his buddy. This was great to the Collaboration. He asked me if he can do this workshop again tomorrow to practice. I am very excited that he is getting so excited about his work.

Learner: Stephan    Learning Coach: Margaret Patrick       Date: June, 2016
Learning Area:  Reading                                      Narrative Learning story
Learning Observed
Stephan was participating in Reading workshop focused on learning to scan a text to find information which would  help him sequence the main events. First he skimmed through the text prior to reading, to gather lots of information and make some predictions about the story. After reading the text he co-constructed a list of the main ideas which the LC wrote on the whiteboard. He used numbers for each main idea. His next task was to ensure the main ideas were in the correct sequence.  To do this he needed to use a scanning strategy to check the text to find evidence if their order was correct or needed  adjustments.  He was joined by William who challenged the order and together they went back to the text to confirm the changes. Scanning is very useful strategy that clever readers use.Scanning a text is a reading technique where the reader looks for specific information rather than trying to absorb all the information. Identifying the main events helps when retelling stories to others and the strategy of summarising. Stephan is working at Level 2B of NZC.

Next Learning Steps
  • Be able to create his own list of main ideas and then sequence them independently.
  • Use scanning strategy when selecting sites and information in books and online sources..
  • Use scanning to find information to support his responses to text and when writing about characters.
